Transparencies

Creating Transparencies of Your Work
Working with a transparency gives you control over the photography of your artwork and only incurs a small fee, because it saves one step in the set-up process.

35mm
While 35mm slides are acceptable sources for creating an edition, they can be problematic.  Of all the transparency options, they contain the least amount of data and setbacks can occur if they’ve been projected, as their exposure to the lamp’s heat can warp them and make the edges curl, producing a less-than-optimal scan and reproduction.

Medium Format
Medium format transparencies, like 2 ¼” x 2 ¼” are preferable to 35mm slides, as they contain a tighter dot pattern, lending greater clarity to the finished print.

Large Format
Larger formats, like 4”x5”s are preferable to other transparencies.  Their dot pattern will be even denser, containing even more data, ensuring a stunning final print.  Formats that go even larger than 4”x5”s create wonderful prints, as well, but are not necessary for creating a beautiful print, when a 4”x5” will work just as well.

NOTE: In all cases, positive transparencies are preferred.

When possible, we recommend that you use a professional photographer to take any transparencies of your artwork, because the quality of our scan is dependent upon the quality of the transparency with which you provide us.

These are issues of photo skill, film quality, processing quality, as well as equipment including the camera, lens and light source. These factors, ultimately, impact just how large a print can be reproduced. And, you’ll want to ensure that your image has been properly lit, so exposure and color balance are a true representation of your work.

There is a $10 handling fee for images not uploaded through the website.
