Holding On To Innocence
Johanna Waisley is completely surrounded by children! Not only by her own, but also by the continuous parade of petite feet that toddle into her home photography studio in Ashburn, VA — Simply Create Photography. "You Captured Who My Child Is"
Johanna sees more than snips and snails or sugar and spice in the eyes of children, "Children possess such a wonderfully pure spirit. They have no fears or insecurities of the camera…it is always amazing that they have individual personalities from the day they are born. This is what I love to capture on film."
During her sittings, Johanna captures character, innocence and plenty of fun. As you can imagine, an extraordinary sense of humor is required to professionally photograph children. One of Johanna's most entertaining sessions includes birthday cake. "I put the child in just a diaper and a small cake on the floor and let them 'have at it'! It is so funny, as for most, it is the first time they have ever eaten cake...they end up with it everywhere!" laughs Johanna, who is almost certainly having a ball behind the camera, also.
Most of all, Johanna says that, "When a client tells me 'you really captured who my child is,' I am pleased with my work."
Focus On The Photographer
Johanna began a life of photography as a teenager, furthering her education in collage along with an emphasis in graphic design and later inspired her own students as a high school photography and design teacher. Wanting to spend more time with her first son, Johanna began her own business — Simply Create Photography. "I haven't looked back since – it's been great!"
Today, she infuses her design skills into the final works of photography to create amazing presentations for her clients. She understands their wants and requests because most are [parents] with small children — just like her! "I can truly relate with them and this time in their lives," says Johanna, who has melded her love of parenthood with her passion for photography.
Online Printing and Framing Saves Time for Photographer-Mom
"Having good vendors who are reliable, fast and convenient really help to make this juggling act work!" says Johanna.
To offer custom framed portraits to her clients, Johanna uses the Print & Frame Shop on a regular basis. "As a busy mom working part-time, it is invaluable to be able to upload a print, pick out the framing options and then have it delivered to me — all without having to drag my kids around from place to place to get this task done."
Johanna can choose from eleven fine art quality papers and canvases printed using the much sought after, fine art giclee method, "I have the collection of paper samples. I like the variety of offerings," says Johanna. She also uses the catalog as a tool to give her clients exactly what they want, "I like the [collections] of frames to show my clients so they can keep consistency throughout their décor."

Johanna continues to capture the essence of childhood in her own distinctive style, "I like to bring a smile to the viewers' day – after all, this is what children do."
