Keeping the lines of communication open is a real joy for us and we thought we’d share some excerpts from recent correspondence that we imagine you’ll find as interesting as we did.
Who: Gene Lysaker, Twin Valley, MN (a.k.a “The Loon Man”) “I am 79 years old and am still painting away.”
After being given that first box of paints by your second grade teacher, when did you become a full-time artist?
“I was in the Army Air Corps during WW2 flying as a gunner on a B-24 bomber in the South Pacific. After the war I went to the Minneapolis College of Art & Design, studying Advertising art and painting. I worked as an advertising artist and art director for about 30 years. I retired early and planned my second career, as a painter… started out as a Wildlife artist. Then, I moved back to the place of my youth (ethnic Norwegian), and began my ‘Americana’ Period, which has gone on 'til now, painting the thoughts and scenes of my youth.”
What will your next PictureFrames.com framing project be?
“One of the frames you are sending me will be used for a painting I am doing for the U. of Minnesota of Robert Bergland -- a former U. S. Secretary of Agriculture, and a native of Minnesota. [They’ll be] unveiling the pix at the Bob Bergland building this summer.”
Any parting thoughts?
“I have often bought frames from other frame companies, but always return to Graphik Dimensions… Life goes by too fast when you have as much fun with your WORK? as I do. And, I shall continue buying my frames at your fine company as long as the good Lord lets me keep painting.”
So, where can you see what Gene’s been up to?
If you’re in the area, take a drive to Twin Valley, MN, where you’ll catch his art hanging in the Heritage and Art Center, the Lutheran Memorial Nursing Home, the Lutheran Retirement Center, the Post Office and, of course, at his own studio.
