My art speaks for me
when I can't...
Who: Amy Elizabeth, Frederick, MD. Artist, Nature-Lover, Wife and Mother of Five, Who’s on a Journey to Motivate and Inspire

What first inspired you to become an artist?
“I have had a strong interest in art since about the third grade… I had this teacher who would read to us and tell us stories and she would illustrate the stories on the chalk board.  She would have it mostly created when we came in for the day but would then add details while telling the story.  I can remember that it was the only time when the entire class was silent.  When everyone just sat there and watched.  I wanted to capture that type of attention.  I wanted to create something that just made people smile... something that made them happy.  I wanted to inspire like that.  I took one art lesson in JR High and then quit.  I had trouble with instructors telling me that my art wasn’t right and that it should look more like this or that.  In my mind I believe art to be whatever the creator wants it to be.”

So, how did you manage to find your way back to it?
“I never stopped creating art.  I would paint for my family and friends mostly, but I didn't start selling my art until 2002.  I was working with FEMA as a training specialist and my husband was working with the government when 9/11 happened. After 9/11 my husband was called to active duty for one year.  He had to go overseas and I just knew that I needed to be home with the children.  I decided then to quit working and start working on my art from home.  I am happy to say that I still continue to do this.  I have never been happier.”

How would you describe your art?
“My art is very contemporary.  I love the use of vivid color and bold texture… most of my paintings have more than 6 layers of paint on them… I work primarily with acrylics on either canvas or paper.”

“I have two main styles:  My non-objective abstracts that deal with just the feeling of the moment and the flow of color -- I have always had a flair for the abstract... I try to get people to go beyond the exact details of something and go more into the feeling that the object may bring. Then there are my ‘inspired by nature’ pieces.  These pieces just make me sit back and smile… I love the colors and the scenes of the world around me.  I like being reminded that there is more to life than what I am doing or what I have going on.  From the biggest trees to the tiniest flowers... nature never stops amazing me.”

How has PictureFrames.com supported your efforts?
“I have been using PictureFrames.com for about two years now.  I had my first real commissioned job and it required two framed pieces.  I priced around the local frame shops and quickly realized that it was not an option. The cost to frame the pieces was more than I had quoted for the pieces themselves.  Thus began my Internet searching.  It didn't take me long and I found your site.”

“When I received my frames, I was hooked.  You have a return customer here! I am a very impatient person.  I can’t wait to receive my order and so I usually order things via next day or two day mail.  Your company always has my frames to me on time and looking perfect.  You guys work fast.”

“To tell you the truth I was impressed from day one -- before I even received my frames.  Your site blew me away. My favorite part of your web site would have to be the personal frame shop.  I have to say, that is just neat.  I love being able to see my project on the screen and put together before I order it.  It is so helpful and takes all of the guesswork out of the work.”

So, where can you see what Amy’s been up to?
Your best bet is to visit with her in cyberspace. And, she’s currently looking for gallery space, so if you know any gallery owners in the Frederick, MD area who might click with her sensibilities, then let her know (and, by all means, let us know if our matchmaking was successful!).

A Personal Note from Steve & Joan Feinsod, Founders
In the Beginning
We were recent college grads, having been to both high school and junior high school together. We had met in the 6th grade.

Joan, majored in Advertising and Package Design and I studied Architecture, Space Planning and Interior Design. We chose those paths, because we believed that they would not only allow us to remain close to our true passions -- Art and Design -- but possibly enable us to make a living on the fringes of these interests. We were hoping not to be "starving artists."

Steve & Joan Feinsod
The Journey Of 1000 Orders Began With A Single One
Our first order of picture frames was for our silver standard frame, in select sizes -- $5,000.00 worth. And, they all fit under the dining room table.

That was the birth of Graphik Dimensions Ltd.

We were a one product company and, soon after, added the gold frame and became a two product company… and then the canvas frame, which turned us into a four product company.

Silly us... we were still starving artists -- doing what we could to keep our heads above water. For the first 3 years it was just the two of us. For the next 10 years, ALL of our employees (four, in total) earned more than we did.

That first order of picture frames -- the one that fit under the dining room table -- arrived 40 years ago this month.

We have since grown to a team of more than 120 people, dedicated to exceeding your expectations, working in a facility well over 100,000 square feet -- and expanding rapidly.

The Future’s So Bright…
It has been a privilege and an honor to be your source for picture frames and so much more -- and we look forward to meeting your needs for the next 40 years. We’re excited about bringing you lots of new services, an ever-evolving product line and continuing to raise the bar even higher. And, we hope that you’ll keep giving us the wonderful feedback you always have.

So, whether you’ve been with us since the beginning, or are a new member of our family, we thank you.
