Operation DIY: Cheesy Chalkboard Tray

December 28, 2017 / Create, DIY

Sometimes it’s big fun is to create something for ourselves rather than hitting the stores trying to find just the right look, the right size, the one thing that’s a yes. (Plus, it’s great to be able to say, “I made this,” and hear the wows.)

So, while we were pinning away on our Pinterest the other day we came across this awesome chalkboard cheese tray DIY from the DIY Network. We loved the idea and wanted to try it ourselves with some of our frames!

Our version is much easier to make and saves you money, time and materials, because you can simply order a pictureframes.com pre-made chalkboard! Then all you need to do is measure, attach the handles of your choice, and voila! So let’s get started!

First, go to pictureframes.com and choose the moulding that fits your style – metallic, barnwood, etc. – there are a ton of custom chalkboard frames to choose from, so you’ll get just the look you want. We selected a natural frame with some nice texture for ours for our tray.

  • Two drawer handles (and screws)

Often, if you purchase a handle from your local hardware store it will come equipped with the appropriate screws. It’s fun to select the perfect handles to match your personalized chalkboard and décor!

Once you’ve gathered all of your supplies, find a an open, strong surface to drill your handles on. Make sure the surface is sturdy as it may take some force to drill into the picture frame. Once you’ve located a good spot, you can get to work!

ASSEMBLING YOUR CHEESEBOARD:

Measure your frame area to determine where the handles should be so they are neatly and evenly centered on either side of the frame.

Measuring for Handle Placement

Mark the spot for your first screw by driving it slowly into the frame.

Attatching the handles

Screw each hole in individually until the handles are securely fastened.

Plan a party so you can show off your handy cheese board!
