What You’ll Need
• A ruler or tape measure
• A flat surface
• A notepad or phone to record measurements
How to Measure Photos, Prints & Posters
For flat, paper-based artwork, measuring is simple:
Step 1: Measure the Width Measure from the left edge to the right edge of the artwork.
Step 2: Measure the Height Measure from the top edge to the bottom edge.
Record your size as: Width × Height (example: 11" × 14")
Important: Measure only the artwork itself. Do not include any existing mat or frame.
How to Measure Canvas Artwork
Canvas artwork is measured slightly differently due to its wrapped edges and depth.
Step 1: Measure the Width Measure from wrapped corner to wrapped corner across the front of the canvas.
Step 2: Measure the Height Measure from wrapped corner to wrapped corner from top to bottom.
Record your size as: Width × Height (example: 18" × 24")
Keep Depth in Mind
Canvas artwork has thickness, which plays an important role when selecting a frame. While depth isn’t included in the size you enter, it’s essential to choose a frame style that properly accommodates the canvas depth, so your artwork sits securely and looks finished.
Frames designed specifically for canvas ensure proper support and a clean presentation. For canvas floating frames, we recommend selecting frames with a rabbet depth that is close to the depth of your canvas. If you choose a floating frame that does not share the same depth as your canvas, then your canvas art will stand out beyond the face of your canvas floating frame. Canvas also works well with other frames that are at least 2½ inches wide or have a deep rabbet to hold your canvas in place.
Artwork Size vs. Frame Size
When ordering a custom frame, always enter the artwork size, not the outside size of the finished frame.
Measuring Tips Before You Order
• Measure twice to confirm accuracy
• Avoid rounding up
• Double-check orientation (portrait vs. landscape)
• Consider how the finished piece will fit your wall space
Final Thoughts
Taking a few extra minutes to measure your artwork properly can make all the difference. Whether you’re framing a canvas, photo, print, or poster, accurate measurements help ensure your custom frame fits perfectly and looks professionally finished.
