All Things Framing

What is a rabbet?

We know you're thinking of a fluffy, long-eared animal that hops its way around when you see the word "rabbet," but one of those little cuties would be spelled "rabbit." When it comes to framing, a rabbet is the recess on the back inside edge of the frame into which your artwork fits. "Rabbet size" refers to the depth of this recess, and for most framing projects, any rabbet size is fine.

  • Custom Frames & Ready-Made Frames

These frames have open rabbets, so they will work for almost any framing project.

    Wood Frame Rabbet
  • Metal Frames

Most of our metal frames have enclosed rabbets. When you're framing a very thick piece - like a stretched canvas - in a metal frame, be sure to choose one with a rabbet that will accommodate the thickness of the piece.

    Metal Frame Rabbet
  • Canvas Floater Frames

The depth of your canvas should closely match the depth of your canvas floater.

What is an open back or ready-made frame?

An open back ready-made frame is a standard sized picture frame. When you order a ready-made frame from pictureframes.com, you're saving money! That's because we've preassembled these frames to fit the most popular and frequently occurring sizes for artwork, photography and documents. At pictureframes.com, these sizes include (in inches): If the artwork you are framing has different dimensions than those listed below, order a Custom-Made frame for the perfect fit!

4x6 5x7 8x10 8 1/2x11
9x12 8x12 12x24 16x20
11x14 12x16 12x18 18x24
14x18 20x24 20x30 22x28

What are photo frames?

Our all inclusive, photo frames come pre-assembled with a premium wood or metal frame, protective glass, ready-to-hang backing board and matting for most packages. These photo and collage frames are an easy, budget-friendly choice for framing standard sized photos, certificates, diplomas, children's artwork and more.

Are your frames made in the USA?

We seek the finest quality materials and are proud that the vast majority of our frames are both sourced & made in the USA. 100% of our finishing - including matting, glazing & backing - is from USA sources and all finished products are assembled in the USA. We also use upcycled materials from USA sources wherever possible (ex: reclaimed fence board and barn wood found right here in the USA).

What is an upcycled wood fiber frame?

Upcycled Wood Fiber frames are an eco-friendly choice made from wood, otherwise destined to end up in a landfill, but transformed into something beautiful. They're made by breaking down scrap wood into fibers and combining with wax and resin. Upcycled Wood Fiber frames are incredibly warp-resistant and amazingly sturdy because they have no knots or grain like normal wood. If you love the characteristics of wood but are looking for a more budget-friendly price point, then Upcycled Wood Fiber is a great choice for your fine art paintings, photography and more.

Will my frame look like the ones in the picture?

Different computer monitors display colors differently, so we're unable to guarantee the color accuracy of our online images. If you're not sure about the color or texture of one of our frames, we invite you to order a free sample. Note that all-wood frames do exhibit a subtle natural variation in color and grain. To order a free frame sample, simply shop as usual and when you select a frame you like, choose 'Free Samples'.

How will my frame arrive? Do I have to assemble it?

Open Back and Custom-Made frames are typically shipped assembled with free hanging hardware. However, most metal frames will need to be assembled upon arrival. An easy assembly kit is included. All you need is a screwdriver. If you are specifically looking for a preassembled metal frame, choose our Metal BackLoader collection or one of our many All-Inclusive Photo Frame Packages.

Do you use an industry standard allowance for your frames?

To help your art, acrylic front and backing all fit securely inside the frame without being TOO tight, we typically allow for an extra 1/8th of an inch allowance. So, your frame will be just slightly larger than the image size you enter to hold everything properly.

What is archival/conservation framing?

Archival framing offers the ultimate protection for your fine art, collectibles, heirloom documents and more. Archival options include acid-free foamcore backing and UV protective acrylic, preserving your presentation up to 75 years. You can upgrade any order to an archival presentation by adding the premium archival finishing options. Or, if you have a standard size, our Conservation Kit Plus framing package is exclusively available in Ready-made sizes. This package includes acid-free foamcore backing, acid-free conservation white rag mat, mylar mounting corners and UV protective acrylic. And, for easy grab and go options, choose from one of our easy, one-click Archival packages.

How do I measure my artwork for framing?

Measure the exact width (w) and height (h) of the outside dimensions of the image or artwork in inches, and round down to the nearest 1/8th inch. For example, an image size of 9 3/16" x 11 9/16" will require a 9 1/8" x 11 1/2" frame. If you are planning to frame a canvas, measure from outside wrapped corner to outside wrapped corner.

Do the back of your frames come finished?

While we take great care to make sure each frame will look stunning on your wall, we do not finish the back of our frames. As such, you may occasionally see some rough, unfinished marks on the back of our handcrafted frames that include, but are not limited to, paint spots, scuffs, and measurement marks.

Do you pattern match on frame corners?

We do not pattern match on frame corners. This is an eco-conscious decision that helps significantly reduce waste and save cost for our Creative Community. If you are looking for a closed-corner frame, please take a look at our Open Back Frames Collections, or our Photo Frames Collections, each of which have frames with closed, matched corners and come in ready-made sizes only.

If you are looking for a custom sized frame with corners that match closely, consider our Studio Collection or Black Satin Collection.

For custom sized ornate frames that provide more closely matched patterns, try ornate frames with tighter patterns such as those in our Slimwoods Collection.

We make sure every frame that hangs on your wall looks absolutely amazing and gallery ready. Our ornate frames with large patterns are no exception. Here are some examples of what these frames look like at the corners and in rooms:

All Things Canvas

How do I order a rolled paper or canvas print?

Prints can be ordered in the Canvas Prints section in the top navigation. To get started, upload your image and choose your print size. Select the 'Print This Image' button. Choose your canvas or paper substrate and click the 'Add to Cart' button. If you choose to print your image on a canvas, select the 'Rolled Canvas' option and click the 'Add to Cart' button.

When do I need to order canvas clips?

If you are framing a canvas, you may need canvas clips. If your canvas is deeper than the rabbet of your wooden frame (if the canvas sticks out in the back), canvas clips will hold the canvas in the frame. If this is not an issue, you can simply use the clips that come with your frame or framing kit. Our canvas clips come in one standard canvas size and do not apply to metal frames.

What frame should I choose for my canvas?

For canvas floater frames , we recommend selecting frames with a rabbet depth that is close to the depth of your canvas. If you choose a floater frame that does not share the same depth as your canvas, then your canvas art will stand out beyond the face of your canvas floater frame. Canvas also works well with other frames that are at least 2 1/2 inches wide or have a deep rabbet to hold your canvas in place. Shop All Canvas Friendly Frames

What are giclee canvas prints?

Giclee (pronounced "gee-clay") is a highly sophisticated inkjet printing process that uses fade-resistant archival inks to produce prints that last. But you can create your own Giclee canvas print capturing cherished life moments and your museum quality print will arrive beautifully vivid, ready to hang.

What is the difference between 3/4" stretched canvas and gallery wraps?

A 3/4" stretched canvas is a classic presentation that's tautly stretched over an all-wood 5/8" stretcher bar and stapled in place for a finished depth of 3/4". Stapling is always done on the back for the more professional look that sets us apart from our competitors. This classic size is the most frame-friendly depth, finished with a standard, white border wrap and works well with hundreds of frame choices. A gallery wrap uses a thicker, all wood stretcher bar for a final depth of either 1", 1.5" or 2". It's most commonly used when the canvas is hung unframed as a stand-alone work of art or in a canvas floater frame with exposed edges. Choose from three border styles - mirrored image, black or white.

What is a mirrored image border?

The very edges of your image will be copied and flipped to cover the outer edge of the gallery wrap. The entire original work will be visible. It's just an artistic way to add visual interest to your canvas print. (Just be careful selecting this option if the edge of your image has people or words)

Canvas Printing with Mirrored Border

What is a rolled canvas?

Rolled Canvases are prints only, with a 2 1/2", white border around the edge of the canvas. A great choice for professional artists and photographers who want greater flexibility for mounting and framing, it's a more economical solution because it requires no additional stretcher bar materials and it's easier to ship.

Mats & Liners

Picture Frame Mat Components Diagram

What is the Difference Between a Linen Liner and a Mat?

Mats are made of layered paper board. Your artwork sits behind the mat. Mats create a polished, classic presentation, adding depth and scale, while softening the transition from image to frame. Mats are available in a multitude of colors, textures and styles and can be custom cut to fit almost any size. Liners are made of linen stretched over a wooden frame and attached to the inside of your frame. Your artwork will sit inside the linen liner. Genuine linen over natural wood makes for an elegant, upscale presentation. Linen liners add depth and, like mats, soften the transition from image to frame. Linen liners are a perfect accompaniment to canvas art, paintings of all kinds and even photos. They also add structural support for larger pieces of art.

How do I order a mat?

Mats may be purchased as an additional option to your frame presentation or as an individual mat order. In the Mats and Liners section of the website, you may choose to order pre-cut mats (available in standard sizes), custom-cut mats, or bulk mat sheets (available in boxes of 16). Currently, mat sizes offered on our website are 32" x 40" or *Oversized 40" x 60" (outside dimensions). If you would like to order an oversized mat, please call Customer Care at 800-332-8884.

What size should my mat window opening be?

The opening is the visible portion of your artwork. On pictureframes.com, all you need to do is enter the size of your picture. We will automatically make the mat opening 1/4" smaller than your art size on all sides. This will keep your art from falling out through the mat opening. For example, when ordering, if you select a picture size of 8" x 10", the mat opening will be automatically adjusted to 7 3/4" x 9 3/4".

How big should I make my mat borders?

Borders are the part of mat on each side that surround your artwork. Mat border size is a matter of personal taste. We typically recommend borders that are twice the width of the frame or at least 2 1/2".

What Size Frame do I Order?

Order a frame that is the same size as the outside of your mat. Outside mat size is the same for all mats in multiple-mat presentations. If you have an existing frame you can measure the back opening of your frame to get the size.

How Much Mat Offset/Reveal Should I have?

When using multiple mats, the offset is the visible portion of the lower mat. We recommend 1/4" offset (or reveal) of your lower mats.

How do I order a custom multi-opening collage mat?

Custom Collage mats can be ordered by filling out our Custom Collage Mat Worksheet. Please include total outside mat dimensions, opening sizes and spaces between openings in your request. Note that making your mat openings 1/4" smaller than the items you are framing will allow the mat to hold the object in place.

Do I need to add a mat to my picture?

This depends on what you want to frame. The most vulnerable mediums all but require adding a mat and protective acrylic front. Pastels, watercolors, pencil drawings, charcoal art, and vintage documentation need to be well preserved. Mats create added space between your art and the acrylic front to keep air circulating for preventing condensation build up which can lead to mildew or buckling.
Typically, canvas paintings do not have mats or an acrylic front because the last layer of varnish adequately protects the painting for preservation. Photography, movie posters, typography and other prints don’t require a mat, but their presentation sure does have an added pop when paired with the right mats. And you still get the extra level of protection with better air circulation to prevent condensation buildup which can lead to mildew or buckling over time.

Which mat should I choose?

When framing and matting a photo, document or piece of art, you must consider the value of the object being framed. If your piece is purely decorative, you can choose one of our many decor mats, from cotton to metallic to suede, in a huge array of colors and styles. These mats are an economical choice for many types of presentations, however, may not protect your piece over the course of many years. If you are framing a valuable and irreplaceable object that you intend to preserve for generations, you should choose one of our acid-free, lignin-free mats. These pH neutral mats meet conservation standards. We offer conservation-grade matting in a variety of styles and colors.

What Are Decor/ Decorative Mats?

Decorative paper mats are a great economical option for your piece. They are pH neutral, buffered for extended life and protection for your art.

What is an acid-free mat?

Acid-free mats are made of 100% cotton fiber core and backing which are naturally 100% acid-free and lignin-free. Acid-free mats are recommended for matting precious photography, important documents, heirloom photos and more.

What are rag mats?

Our Rag Mats are made of 100% cotton fiber core and backing which are naturally 100% acid-free and lignin-free. The conservation surface is buffered with calcium carbonate to an alkaline reserve of 3-5%, so you can be sure they won't degrade your matboard or artwork.

What is a V-Groove?

A V-Groove mat creates the illusion of double matting, which elevates the overall look and feel of any presentation and helps to draw the viewer's eye to the fine art in the center. Mats with contrasting colors really pop with a v-groove. It can be a way to create the look of a double mat at a more cost effective price point.

Mat V-Groove

What is a Reverse Bevel Cut?

A reverse bevel cut mat has a bevel that runs inside instead of out. In effect, it gives you a straight edge on the window. The primary reason to choose a reverse bevel cut is to hide the colored core (white, black or off-white) that is in the center of all mat boards. You may choose a reverse bevel cut for either the top or bottom mat - or both.

Mat Reverse Bevel V-Groove

What is a raised mat?

This treatment adds a shadow around the artwork, giving the presentation depth and interest for an exquisite high-end look. Spacers are inserted before the mat is added. A second or third raised mat may be added if desired. Glass or acrylic glazing is then placed on top.

Double Mats Diagram Raised Mats Diagram

What is a bottom weighted mat?

Bottom weighted mats have more width at the bottom than on the top and sides. This technique is most often used by professional photographers and artists who prefer a "museum" type look. It also helps to counteract a visual perception problem. If a picture is placed directly in the center of a mat with equal width borders, the human eye will perceive that the picture sits below center and therefore look top-heavy. A weighted mat compensates for this illusion and better balances the presentation.

Fronts & Backs

What is glazing?

Glazing refers to the strong sheet of clear acrylic that covers and protects your artwork once framed. We offer four types of acrylic fronts with foamcore backing to fit your individual needs.

  • Classic (Clear Acrylic and Foamcore Backing)

Consists of a 3/16" thick foamcore backing board and "glass-like" 1/16" thick clear acrylic. This best seller is a classic finishing choice - perfect for artwork and photography of all kinds. Foamcore is a great choice because it has a higher level of protection for framed items than corrugated backing. Its white finish preserves the integrity of translucent artwork. It doubles as a dust cover thanks to its neat, clean appearance, and it works well for dry mounting objects to the backing.

  • Classic Non-Glare (Non-Glare Acrylic and Foamcore Backing)

Includes all the same benefits as the Clear Acrylic option, but with one major distinction: the 1/16" thick non-glare acrylic cuts down the glare on items in direct light or near windows. Note: This finishing option should not be used with shadow boxes or presentations with more than one mat due to increased distortion.

  • Premium Heavy-Duty (Heavy-Duty Clear Acrylic and Foamcore Backing)

Consists of a 3/16" thick foamcore backing board and "glass-like" 3/32" thick clear acrylic. This best seller is a classic finishing choice - perfect for larger artwork and photography and shadow box presentations. Foamcore is a great choice because it has a higher level of protection for framed items than corrugated backing. It doubles as a dust cover thanks to its neat, clean appearance. The smooth, white surface is ideal for dry mounting objects and preventing ripples in thin artwork.

  • Premium Archival (UV Protective Acrylic and Acid-Free Foamcore Backing)

This framing option grants the best protection when preservation is the primary concern. Both the 3/16" thick, acid-free foamcore and the 3/32" thick UV protective acrylic helps guard an image against deterioration and fading - preserving your most treasured, irreplaceable items for generations. Perfect for: Vintage family photos, priceless artwork & historic and heirloom documents.

Do you sell glass?

We offer acrylic glazing instead of glass for most of our custom, ready-made and metal frames. Acrylic is shatter-proof, lightweight and provides the same level of clarity as framing glass. It also offers the same UV protection. Glass is only included in our all-inclusive presentations, available in the Photo Frames section of the website.

How do I clean my acrylic?

Our acrylic cleaner cleans, shines and protects your framing acrylic. It is anti-fog, anti-static, dust repellent and can be used on any plastic surface. Note: never use window glass cleaner or ammonia-based products, when cleaning acrylic, as it may cloud the acrylic surface over time.

Why is acrylic glazing an additional charge?

In an effort to ensure minimal waste and to keep costs low, we enable our customers to order their frame components individually. Because many of our customers use our frames for their original paintings, which do not require acrylic glazing, we give our customers the option of having acrylic glazing included in their order whether they are framing an unstretched canvas, painting or ordering a print.

What is the blue film on my acrylic?

The blue film is a protective film on the acrylic to prevent scratches and other types of damage during shipping. Removal involves peeling the film off both sides of the acrylic glazing.

Why didn't my frame come with acrylic front or backing?

Our frames don’t automatically include acrylic glazing because not all artwork needs it. For example, the professional Artist community that we serve would not need acrylic for their canvas paintings because glazing would damage their work. So that's why we offer acrylic as a separate add-on item during the ordering process after you select your frame. We never want to send you something that you don't need because that would be wasteful. If you need glazing to complete your presentation, you can always order it online, or call 800-332-8884 and one of our Customer Care Advisors will help you out.

Do your frames come with a finishing kit?

Not all customers will need a finishing kit (the acrylic front and backing materials) with their frame purchase. In order to reduce waste, a finishing kit is an optional selection you may choose to add on to a frame.

Can you scan or photograph my original artwork?

Yes, you can send us your original artwork for the greatest color accuracy for your edition. We will be able to match our digital file to your original, right here in our studio. We will photograph or scan your original art. Fees apply. However, please use the utmost caution in safeguarding such precious cargo. Make sure to insure your package, protecting it against all possible mishaps, loss or damage. Use Fed Ex or UPS to ship and track, as U.S. Mail offers very limited insurance on works of art. Please Contact Customer Care take advantage of this service.

Can I use my own digital camera to convert my original artwork into a digital file?

It is possible, but most consumer digital cameras are not made to capture the intimate detail of brushstrokes and subtle color variations. We recommend having your work professionally scanned or photographed for the best results.

What does my photographer need to know before shooting my work?

For the best print, your image should be photographed with an even light over the surface without any reflections from the flash or strobe because they will show up in the print. If your photographer is creating a transparency, make sure they shoot a 4x5 inch transparency with gray scale and color card. If your photographer is creating a digital file, make sure the optical file size resolution is 300 dpi/ppi (dots per inch/pixels per inch).

What is the resolution of your printer?

We print at a resolution of 1440x720 pixels.

Can someone copy and reproduce my work when I upload images to pictureframes.com?

No. Your uploaded high-resolution images are maintained on our internal server which is firewall protected. The screen resolutions of all images on our site are deliberately too low for good print quality.

How do I copyright my work?

According to the Library of Congress, visual artwork is considered copyrighted the moment you create it. Your work is automatically protected by the law of the United States and no one else has permission to reprint or use your work for profit in any way without your permission. However, there are legal benefits to copyrighting your work. Visit copyright.gov for more information on copyrighting your art.

Print Editions

What is a giclee print?

Giclee (pronounced "gee-clay"), is a highly sophisticated inkjet printing process that was introduced in the late 1980s. It’s so sophisticated, in fact, that it produces prints, which truly capture the artist's original intent. Even museums have realized the vast potential of this technology and have made giclee editions a permanent part of their collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), Museum of Modern Art (San Francisco) and Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles) to name a few. These prints are created from high-resolution digital images, using the finest quality ink and paper stock available, resulting in color saturation and image detail capture that exceeds other types of image reproduction.

What are the advantages of creating giclee prints?

For starters, you have many more fans of your work than can actually afford one of your originals. By offering a giclee print of an original, you’ve enabled them to acquire art that they love, that can even be signed by you, and is an extremely close representation of the original — and available at a fraction of the price. You’ll also get to enjoy additional revenue on a singular work of art, as well as an expanded fan base and increased exposure.
Giclee editions are also so cost-effective and consistent in quality that you can order them as few as one at a time so you’re not over-extended while you continue to receive orders from your clients. This keeps you liquid, so that you can invest in even more images that connect with your public. However, if you do choose to order in large quantities the beauty of giclee prints is such that your 250th impression, is just as precise and beautiful as your 2nd.

How much does a giclee edition cost?

The cost of your edition depends on 2 things: whether you are printing on paper or canvas and the size of your print. The price will adjust depending on your preferences. To order a print with this Pro Artist service, call Customer Care at 800-493-7263.

Are there any extra fees for my edition?

Small fees apply, depending on the services you select:

  • If you do not have a digital original file to upload to our site, set-up fees start at $100 and depend upon the nature and size of the original.

  • Certificates of Authenticity costs are based on quantity, for a small fee as anticipated, every purchase will accrue shipping costs

What is a Certificate of Authenticity?

You will receive an optional Certificate of Authenticity for a small fee with each print ordered as part of an edition at pictureframes.com. This document adds value to your art because it confirms the authenticity, quantity and other details of your edition. Typically, Certificates of Authenticity are signed by the artist and given to the client who purchases a print from an edition. To order a print with this Pro Artist service, call Customer Care at 800-493-7263.

How long will it take to create an edition?

Editions are just like any of our print only orders, most take only 3-4 business days to print and leave the warehouse. If you would like to adjust the color, size, paper etc, you may do so on your end and upload a new file to print and reorder.

How do I number and sign my edition?

There are a few ways to go about numbering and signing your edition.

  • You can upload your file with your number and signature already in the file. This is a good option for those who will be printing and framing their editions.

  • You can upload your file with your signature already in the file, and we will do the numbering on our side, for a nominal fee. This is a good option if you are printing a large quantity of prints.

  • You can upload your file with no signature or numbering. Once the file has printed, we can ship your prints to you to sign and number manually. If you choose to add a print and frame package, you will have to ship back the prints to us to frame. We do not recommend this option for most people, as the cost of shipping and insurance can get quite expensive.

Can I order clear bags & backing for my prints or editions?

To order a print with this Pro Artist service, call Customer Care at 800-493-7263. Please note the largest outside dimensions for the clear bag option is 32” x 40”.

How much will my giclee prints sell for?

Ultimately, the price is up to you. The following considerations should be taken when pricing your edition:

  • Consider the price of your original work, which should be much higher, as a guide to how much you will sell your editions for

  • Your gallery, representative or agent may want a percentage of the sale

  • The size of your prints will affect the price you assign your work. Consider offering multiple sizes, such as small, medium and large versions so anyone who loves your work can afford to acquire it

  • The cost of printing, matting and framing will also affect the price at which you sell your prints

  • The quantity of your edition also has an impact. Generally, limited editions are seen as collector’s items and often sell for more than open editions

How large should I make my own digital files?

If you know how to create your own digital files, make sure they are 300 DPI/PPI (dots per inch/pixels per inch) at actual output (print) size. Also, make sure you use RGB (red/green/blue) because our printers and RIP software are profiled to print only RGB files. We prefer .tiff format with no compression, but .jpeg format is also acceptable. Note: For those of you using Photoshop or a similar program, remember to merge all visible layers, including text layers.

How do I upload an image file to your FTP or send a CD with my image?

We recommend uploading your artwork to our interactive framer for quick and easy processing. If your image file is larger than 250mb, we prefer you upload your files to our FTP site, available at no charge to you. You may also send a CD of images at no charge. The file(s) must be sized at the desired print size. Please Contact Customer Care to take advantage of these services.

How large of an image can you print?

The max print size depends on which paper substrate you choose to print on. However, most of our state-of-the-art printers will print as large as 50 x 80+ inches. (Length is not an issue because our papers come on long continuous rolls.) We can print images with a minimum of 1-inch border as wide as 50 inches. We can stretch canvases up to 50 x 50 inches. However, because of shipping costs, the largest presentation size (including any frame) that you can order online is 48" x 83". If you would like to create a larger print or framed presentation, you may upload your image to our FTP site or mail us a CD with your image, free of charge. Please call Customer Care at 800-332-8884 to take advantage of these services.

Is it common to print a photograph on watercolor paper or non photographic paper?

Yes. With the advancement of the giclee method, many photographers are now enjoying the choice of art papers, canvas, and other substrates to gain a desired texture, softening effect and image quality.

Can I stretch my canvas prints when they arrive?

Yes, but please take great care! Stretching a giclee printed canvas is a more delicate process than stretching a blank canvas. If you stretch too tight, the image may look as though it is cracked. If your print is damaged as you are stretching the canvas, we cannot be held responsible. We can stretch your canvas prints for you so that you don’t have to worry. If any damage occurs in the process, it will be reprinted at no cost. If you do choose to stretch your own canvas, we offer a variety of stretcher bars in all sizes & depths.

How should I protect my prints? How long will my prints last? Are they waterproof?

Your giclee prints are guaranteed to last up to 75 years under normal gallery conditions. We do not recommend hanging your prints in direct sunlight or rooms with high humidity such as a bathroom or kitchen. We always recommend matting and framing your prints with acid free products for protection. A protective coating is applied to all archival canvases however, they are not waterproof.

My print is damaged! What do I do now?

If your print arrives damaged, simply contact our Customer Care team. For more information on returns, please refer to our Return Policy.

What are my options with discontinued or backordered items?

We provide several alternative options regarding backordered items:

  • You can choose to split the order. The in-stock item will ship first, and the backordered product will ship at a later date with no additional shipping charge

  • You can replace the backordered item with a different item

  • You have the option to cancel your order

Please call our Customer Care team at 800-332-8884 to assist you with backordered items.

Why is a backordered item available to order on your website?

We are constantly getting product back in stock, so in most cases, a delay in delivery is short. In the future we plan to implement a real-time inventory solution for our website to better serve our customers.

How Are Your frames shipped?

We ship our frames with a specially-designed packaging system that is superior to standard cardboard corners. The frame is bubble wrapped and bound to a cardboard suspension pad that allows two inches of space to cushion the frame within its shipping box.

What are oversized carrier fees?

For items over 55" combined outside dimensions*, an Oversized Carrier Charge is added. This reflects our shippers' surcharges (trust us, we don't like it either!) for such large packages (frames, canvas, mats, etc.). Since your magnificent piece is a little larger, it'll take up more room during transportation, so shipping companies place this Oversized Carrier Charge to help cover their costs associated with it.

*Not sure what your combined outside dimensions are? Simply follow this calculation to estimate your outside dimensions: Width + Height + (4 times the moulding width).

To make sure that the presentation is the absolute best for you, we spend extra time assembling them so you don't have to - trust us, it's not always easy putting together an extra-large frame! In some cases, customers have called in to Customer Care and requested a frame be sent unassembled. While this is an option to potentially reduce the oversize carrier charge, we don't recommend it unless you've done it before. And just a heads up, if you want a frame unassembled, Oversized Carrier Charges still apply if you're ordering a mat or any type of finishing.

We promise, your next masterpiece is worth it - and you're going to love how stunning it turns out (even with that Oversized Carrier Charge). But don't take it from us, see what your fellow creative community members think:

"I have ordered several custom frames at this point - the cost will be significantly less that you would pay at the local frame shop, even including the cost of shipping. Highly recommended. Give this site a try."
Barney, a happy pictureframes.com customer

"I ordered an oversized frame - It was much less expensive than a cheap frame in the local shop - everyone thought I got a great deal. I will definitely shop with them again!"
Mary, a happy pictureframes.com customer

*For items over 90' combined outside dimensions please choose Standard Shipping, Expedited Shipping is not available.
